Cultural Focus 2007-08: The Arts in Indiana

Back Home Again in Indiana

Indiana is home to 6.3 million people. What matters to us Hoosiers in today’s modern age? Basketball is almost considered a religion. Homemade pie, popcorn, and pork tenderloins are major food groups. And you’re not really a Hoosier if you can’t play Euchre.

But as artists and educators, we know there’s much more. Indiana is and has always been culturally diverse, rich, and vibrant. Past inhabitants of Indiana cultivated distinct artistic traditions, heavily influenced by geography, occupation, and settlement patterns. When you explore the various tribes of Native Americans, waves of European immigrants and ethnic enclaves, or modern culture that includes Cole Porter, Kurt Vonnegut, J. J. Johnson, and Janet Jackson, you discover that Indiana has always been home to influential artists and their art. And this year FAME will explore it all.
